A downloadable game for Windows

TL;DR:

Game dev class final project, where you use magnetic boots to traverse.

Project Background

This game was created for the final project in my CSC 186: Video Game Development. We were tasked with making a short, but functional game in Unreal Engine using Blueprints. It was made over the course of about 24 non-concurrent hours, and it was my first time using Unreal Engine, so don't expect anything incredible.

Game World/Character Lore:

Here is some lore about the game world that I didn't have time to adequately represent within the game itself lol:

You play as a former maintenance robot in the Mallock industrial center, named LIRA (short for Line Infrastructure Repair Automaton).

She is equipped with magnetic boots that allow her to easily traverse the maglev train rails she was designed for maintaining. She also has welding arcs built into her forearms and long metal cables in her two satchels.

In a negligence-related accident, she sustained major head damage, leaving a jagged hole in her left parietal plate and exposing vital electronic circuits beneath. She was knocked offline upon impact, and her own manufacturers deemed her unworthy of repair, leaving her to rust in the rubble.

Many years later, an energy surge of an unknown source reignites her power cells, rebooting her at the bottom of a collapsed building. While she does remember who she is and what she was designed to do, her storage drive was unable to save the memory of the accident, so she has no idea how she got there.

Determined to figure out what happened, she climbs her way out using her magnetic boots. As she puts the pieces together, she searches for a new purpose as she navigates the abandoned sector she once called home.

Mechanics/Controls

You can turn your magnet boots on and off, and switch between North and South poles.

This allows you to interact with magnetic surfaces that twist, turn, and defy gravity, depending on the pole interaction.

  • If the boots poles are the same as magnetic surface poles, you will repel away from that surface, and can even hover above it.
  • If the boots poles are the opposite of the magnetic surface poles, you cling to that surface and can walk along it. But you cannot jump off it without switching or disabling your boots.

You can also hold down the Switch button to charge a "Power Switch," which can cause differing results depending on the nearest magnetic surface upon its release.

  • If the resulting poles are the same, you will Power Jump off of the surface.
  • If the resulting poles are the opposite, you will Power Snap to the nearest opposite-pole surface.
